At a City Hall Park protest, reformers displayed a countdown clock emphasizing the city is legally required to close Rikers’ jails by August 31, 2027. Mayor Adams has suggested in recent months that the Rikers shutdown plan be abandoned or changed.

In papers filed in Suffolk County Criminal Court in Riverhead, the DA’s office said investigators want to compare DNA from Rex Heuermann’s cheek with the DNA recovered from the pizza crust and napkin he tossed out near his Manhattan office in January.
